Custom-made Ceramic
and Glass Components

Micro engineering

A new product required a combination of glass, sapphire and ceramic components.

Precision-ground and polished quartz rods were used where extreme dimensional stability was required, because quartz has a very low thermal expansion coefficient.

Sapphire spheres are routinely available accurate to sub-micron tolerances. Using these balls allowed an easy and effective way of spacing components while also providing electrical insulation.

Alumina ceramic material was chosen, rather than plastics, because of its creep resistance and other properties. These parts ranged from discs 2mm diameter x 0.3mm thick to machined components 8mm x 5mm x 3.5mm, with 0.3mm diameter holes and a 0.25mm wide slot.
