Wurtzite Boron Nitride – a material harder than diamond

Like many materials, Boron Nitride is available in more than one crystal form. Each form of the material offers distinctly different properties. The two commonly known crystal forms of Boron Nitride are:

Hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN): Easily machined. Offers lubricating properties.
Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN): High hardness even at high temperature.

Under ambient conditions only h-BN is stable and CBN is metastable.

A third metastable form of Boron Nitride also exists – Wurtzite Boron Nitride (w-BN). Wurtzite Boron Nitride has a hardness which even exceeds diamond and can usually only be produced via shock compression methods, such as detonation, or static compression at high pressures.

The high hardness of w-BN material makes it suitable for use in the following applications:

  • Production of cutting tools and inserts
  • Grinding tools
  • Abrasion
  • Polishing

Typical properties include:

  • Extremely high hardness
  • High thermal expansion
  • High thermal conductivity
  • Good thermal and chemical stability
