Machinable Ceramics

Machinable ceramics allow ceramic components to be made without the delay and expense of conventional ceramic manufacturing processes. The conventional ceramic manufacturing processes usually involve a powder being pressed to shape, machined and finally fired to allow the material to achieve its final shape and properties. Further diamond machining may also then be required to obtain close tolerances. Conversely, machinable ceramics can usually be machined with equipment found in typical metalworking machine shops, making it simple to produce components quickly and easily. Achievable tolerances are only limited by the machining equipment being used.

Using machinable ceramics during prototyping can often allow designs to be proved before perhaps considering switching to another type of ceramic for production requirements in higher volume.

A number of different machinable ceramics are available with varying properties. Typical names include MACOR® machinable glass ceramic, Shapal™ Hi-M soft machinable aluminum nitride, Duratec 750® and Pyrophyllite (Lava).

Characteristics of machinable ceramics include:

  • Allows rapid creation of custom-made parts
  • Avoids molding and tooling costs
  • Tolerances only limited by machining capabilities
  • Cost-effective solution when compared to conventional ceramic manufacturing
