Magnesia

Magnesia is the common name used for magnesium oxide (MgO). The material has an extremely useful combination of properties which distinguish it from other ceramics.

Magnesia has a maximum use temperature of 2200ºC, which is significantly higher than many other technical ceramics. It also has good chemical resistance and particularly finds applications within the molten metal industry, as it is superior to alumina in these conditions. It has high electrical resistance and high thermal conductivity, often finding uses in heaters and thermocouples.

Magnesia is a cost-effective material and can be readily used to manufacture tubes, crucibles and other custom-made components.

  • Comparatively high thermal conductivity for a ceramic material
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Good electrical resistance
