Zero Thermal Expansion Glass Ceramic

Zero thermal expansion glass ceramic is a special type of glass that effectively does not change size when subjected to temperature changes. This unique characteristic is made possible due to the presence of two different phases within the material. Upon heating, one of the phases expands positively, whereas the other phase undergoes negative thermal expansion. The overall result is virtually zero thermal expansion.

Zero thermal expansion is an especially valuable property to have where even the smallest dimensional changes are critical. Particular examples include large astronomical mirrors, precision optics, metrology standards and precision mechanical parts.

Characteristics of zero thermal expansion glass ceramic include:

  • Highly accurate dimensional stability through varying temperature changes
  • Low thermal conductivity
  • Transparent material – can be used as a viewing window
  • Can be polished to high accuracy levels
